Make your family a part of the Slater Homestead landscape

06-10-2009
Plans are underway to create beautiful gardens and paths around historic Slater Homestead, and you're invited to display your family's name on a paver in the path.

Slater Homestead is a fine example of early architecture in our region. It developed from a pastoral lease in the early 1850s to become a wayside inn during the gold rush days of the 1880s. The 20th century saw the property evolve into an agricultural enterprise. The property was derelict for almost 30 years before the Shire of Goomalling purchased it and began restoration in 2000. Although restoration work continues the homestead, courtesy of volunteers, is open to visitors on weekends from March till November.

The next project to be undertaken at the homestead is to landscape the area, including pathways to tie the barn, school house and other homestead buildings together. The diagram here shows a possible proposal which would include a BBQ and seating area and lovely landscaped gardens suitable for wedding photos.

The Shire of Goomalling is offering you the opportunity to purchase a square metre of brick-paving for $100. This would include your family name (34 letters maximum) on an engraved brick, plus, if you provide it, a printed page of your family history to be included in a booklet (under your family name) that will be kept at the Homestead.

You can download a paver order form or contact Andrea Hardingham, Community Development Officer at the Shire of Goomalling, for more information on 9629 1101 or cdo@goomalling.wa.gov.au.
