Give people space

The best drone flights are the ones where everyone around you feels safe and comfortable.

When you're flying your drone, keep it at least 30 metres away from other people. One of the simplest ways to do that is to give other people plenty of space.

Think of an invisible 30 metre buffer around your drone. Measure it from the point directly below the drone on the ground. Keep your drone far enough away so no one enters that space.

If you're not sure what 30 metres looks like, it's roughly the length of a basketball court. If you're ever unsure, give people extra space. If someone moves closer, just move away and reset your distance.

The key to a good flying spot

Flying is fun when you've got space to focus on your drone free from distraction.

That's why you must not fly in populous areas. This keeps people on the ground safer if something goes wrong and gives you more room to respond safely if conditions change. Populous areas include built-up places like shopping strips, festivals, sporting fields during games, beaches, and crowded parks.

Before you head out, use a CASA-verified drone safety app to check where you can fly. Then look for an open area with plenty of clear space. You'll have an easier launch and landing, a smoother flight, and more freedom to adjust your path without worrying about people nearby. Just you, your drone and the open sky.

What does it mean to fly in FPV?

Flying first-person view (FPV) means you control your drone using the live video feed from the drone's camera. Usually that's through goggles, a phone, or your controller screen. It's a fun way to fly, but the rules are a little different.

You can fly FPV indoors for fun or sport if the drone cannot leave the building. You don't need CASA approval for this.

To fly FPV outdoors, you'll need to either:
  • be a member of a model aircraft association that has approval to fly FPV, or
  • apply to CASA to fly FPV recreationally.
