Published on Thursday, 26 March 2026 at 3:35:00 PM

In response to Tropical Cyclone Narelle, Telstra’s Incident Management Team (IMT) was stood up earlier this week.

Below is an overview of Telstra’s preparation and planning in response to this imminent weather event:

How Telstra is preparing:

Telstra’s Incident Management Team (IMT) continues to monitor all possible trajectories Tropical Cyclone Narelle may take, including expected flooding and, possible impact on Telstra’s network. Our mitigation works include, but is not limited to:

  1. Heightened network monitoring at Telstra’s Global Operations Centre (GOC).
  2. Heightened power monitoring.
  3. Power inspections at key hub exchanges will be completed ahead of the event, with works including generator checks, fuel levels, and battery reserves.
  4. Activation of Telstra’s Emergency Services Liaison Officers (ESLO) and their engagement with state and local government disaster management groups.
  5. Inspection of key network assets (Telstra mobile sites, exchanges, transmission cables) where the impact may be imminent/likely.
  6. Staging of deployable assets across multiple locations such as generators and staff deployment resources positioned to respond to predicted areas of impact and surrounding locations.
  7. Depots secured and stocked.
  8. Vehicles and staff transport readiness.
  9. Current staff locations are understood with plans to ensure staff are in a safe location and can respond when safe to do so.

Areas of potential impact:

Telstra is continuing to monitor potential areas of impact. Telstra is also focused on those assets that may be impacted that are not necessarily located in areas that may be subject to flooding, however, provisions services into these locations.

Advice to customers:

At this stage there is some impact to the network as follows:

  • Telstra mobile sites: there is impact to three mobile sites located at Roy Hill Mine, Port Hedland Wharf, Dampier East and Waree Hill.

We will continue to provide regular updates throughout the event and recovery phase.
