Event Description
A severe thunderstorm across Geraldton and the wider mid-west region have caused a major power outage leaving thousands homes and businesses without electricity, with Western Power crews working under difficult conditions to restore supply as quickly and safely as possible.
The primary cause for our sites being off the air is because of loss of mains power.
We know how important mobile communications is, and getting mobile base stations restored continues to be our priority. In some places payphones will still be operational.
We’ve brought in additional resources from interstate to help keep our networks sites powered up.
In terms of restoration, we’ve made good progress across most technologies restoring a high number of services. Since this weather event started key restoration achievements include:
- Telstra mobile sites: 71 mobile sites.
- Telstra NBN voice and data services: approx. 4, 292 services.
- Telstra fixed landline: approx. 1,466 services.
- Communities in isolation: 14 communities are no longer in isolation.
In the last 24 hours, 1,063 fixed line telephony, 2,768 Telstra NBN services, 6 community isolations and 69 mobile sites have been restored.
Until mains power is progressively restored, Telstra is also actively working to install temporary generators at key locations across WA to restore services.
!!Important!! We’re working with emergency services and Western Power, and we’ve shared our list of priority sites for restoration for their support and consideration. These priority sites include communities in isolation, IP Core network and key transmission sites.
