Young People Lead the Charge in Designing Goomalling’s New Youth Space - 16 April 2026

The Shire of Goomalling has taken an important step forward in the development of its Recreation Master Plan, hosting a dedicated Youth Consultation Workshop at the Goomalling Town Hall on 16 April 2026.

Twenty young people aged 12–17 participated in the workshop, providing valuable insight into what they believe a future youth space should include. Their enthusiasm and thoughtful contributions demonstrated a strong desire to be actively involved in shaping community facilities that reflect their needs.

During the session, participants reviewed the 2017 concept plan and assessed its relevance today. They then contributed new ideas by adding their vision to the “Dream Wall” and voting on the elements they felt were most important for a modern youth precinct. The top priorities identified were a basketball court, skatepark, and youth chill space.

In a significant show of civic engagement, twelve young people also volunteered to join a future focus group that will work directly with architects and design professionals during the detailed planning phase.

Six Shire Councillors attended the workshop, observing firsthand the passion, creativity, and commitment of local young people. Their involvement reinforced the message that youth voices are present, active, and deserving of meaningful consideration in community planning.

The Department of Lands, Planning and Heritage is currently assessing the proposed road closure and rezoning required to incorporate the youth space into the Goomalling Recreation Ground. Once approvals are finalised, the Shire will progress to detailed planning for the youth precinct, as well as revised entry and exit points and parking arrangements for the Goomalling Recreation Ground and Gumnuts Early Learning Centre, which will be affected by the road closure.

The Shire extends its thanks to all young participants for their leadership and looks forward to continuing this collaborative approach as planning advances.
